TWO APPEALS AGAINST TOWN PLANNING FAIL
Although there did seem to be a case for a service station on the northern side of Riccarton road, the site in question was unsuitable, said the chairman of the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board (Mr J. W. Kealy, S.M) in disallowing an appeal by John Oliver Cochrane aga inst a decision by the Riccarton Borough Council refusing permission to erect a service station at 74-76 Riccarton road.
With Mr Kealy on the board were Messrs C. H. Taylor and W. F. McArthur. Mr E. I. White appeared for the council, and Mr J. R. Woodward for the appellant. Evidence was given that the only garages in the area were on the southern side of Riccarton road and that some cars had to turn round to get petrol.
The appellant claimed that an existing traffic hazard would be eased by the erection of the garage, as cars travelling to the city would not have to cross the road for petrol. The council, however, submitted that such a station would draw more traffic into Riccarton road and would also increase turns across the road by motorists who were fanatical about parchaaing
only one brand of petrol. The board also disallowed
an appeal by T. H. Alexander Building Company, Ltd., against a Christchurch City Council decision not to allow the re zoning of land in V agues road from residential A to industrial B.
Mr J. N. Matson appeared for the company, Mr W. R. Lascelles for the council, and Mr G. T. Mahon and Mr H. M. S. Dawson for objectors.
