PRISON AT AWAPUNI

Proposed Site Abandoned (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 29. The Minister of Justice (Mr Hanan) said today that he had instructed his department to abandon the prospect of siting a youth prison at Awapuni. Mr Hanan said his department sought a site within easy reach of Palmerston North, but the Awapuni site had met with strong opposition from the Palmerston North City Council on the ground that it was an area into which the city was likely to deveiop. The City Council had supplied details of other properties available and these would be inspected, but not before there had been full consultation with the Kairanga County Council. There was no urgency as it would be at least two years before money could be made available for the erection of a building, said Mr Hanan,
