CHICKEN DISPUTE
Assessment Of Damages (N.Z.P. A -Reuter—Copy rig ht) GENEVA, Oct. 29 The council of G.A.T.T. will meet in Geneva today to name a panel to arbitrate the "chicken war” between the United States and the European Common Market. Officials from countries not involved in the dispute will start deliberating on November 11 and announce a decision a week later. The panel's task is to determine the amount of trade the United States has lost as a result of the enforcement of the market’s poultry regulations.
The United States claims it has lost 46 million dollars, while the Market says the figure is nearer 19 million dollars.
The dispute is being closely watched by other countries which export temperate zone foodstuffs to the Common Market. It is the first time the Market’s regulations have been tested and the outcome could affect other products. After the panel’s decision the two sides will still have to settle the remedies for the damage to America’s poultry business. The Market has lowered its chicken tariff since the subject was referred to G.A.T.T., but the tariff is still much higher than it was before the poultry regulations were imposed. y
