CANDIDATES' PROFILES Riccarton Population Greater

(Pqrli—tatary Reporter) WELLINGTON, October 28. Three candidates are in prospect for the Riccarton seat in Parliament They are the sitting member, Mr M. A. Connelly (Labour), Mr L G. B. Wilson (National) and Mr C. E. Cullen (Social Credit). This years boundary changes have removed part of Addington and Spreydon from the east of the electorate and added a block of the Hornby district to th* western side. The 1961 census figures put the population of the new electorate at 29,650. or slightly greater than any other Christchurch electorate. The result* of the 1960 General Election were:— Connelly (Labour) .. 8342 Cullen (Social Credit) 1.019 Sergei (National) .. 6,320 Informal .. .. 75 Total .. -- 15,716 Mr Connelly ha* been member of Parliament for Riccarton since 1956 when he stood in the by-election after the death of Mr A. Technical College He graduated from the Otago University as a bachelor of commerce and was holder of the William Emery Scholarship tor commerce there.

During World War H, Mr Connelly was in the R.N Z.A.F. and served in New Zealand overseas as a flying officer. He has been a member of the Christchurch City Council and the Canterbury University Council, and is the first president of the Canterbury Savings Bank, of which he was a leading advocate. Last year, Mr Connelly went to the United States on a foreign leader grant. Mr Wilson is 33 and is married with two young daugh-

ter*. He is a consulting engineer who began his own practice this year, and last year also established a tourist business in the South Island. He was born in Wellington and went to Wallington College for five years and then trained as an engineer at Canterbury University College. In 1955 he went to work on a water and sewerage scheme in Victoria and joined a Christchurch consulting engineer’s flrm in 1958. Mr Wilson is a qualified pilot and is a member of the Canterbury Aero Club and the Canterbury Gliding Club. He has been on the executive board of the Christchurch

Junior Chamber end a member of the Canterbury Repertory Society. Mr Cullen is 64. He has been interested in Social Credit theories since the 1930's and a member of the Social Credit Political League since 1953 and president of the Riccarton branch. He stood for Riccarton in 1960 He is an electrical wiring contractor, is married, and has a son and two daughters Mr Cullen enlisted for service in World War I when he was 17, and was taken a* a war prisoner into Germany. Hi* recreational interests include fishing and photography and he has earlier been a tennis, Rugby and soccer player.
