A Matter Of Opinion

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Oct. 27. Modern art critics may think of paintings, however horrible, as a worthwhile investment if they heed the experience of Professor Jules Wolffers. Professor Wolffers said he went with his wife to a sale of modem paintings in Boston. In pride of place was a huge painting (price 500 dollars) depicting a gangrenous leg in the final stages of decay. Turning to his wife to express his revulsion, Professor Wolffers was met with: “Let’s buy that. It would look wonderful in the diningroom.” He didn’t. Later it was sold by 5000 dollars, for 5000 dollars.
