Trade Mission In U.S.
The "Queen of the Day” television programme, broadcast by more than 130 American Broadcasting Company affiliated stations in the United States, was visited on two different occasions by members of the New Zealand Trade Mission during the group’s visit to California. Those who took part included Sir Leonard Wright and Lady Cecily Wright, Mr and Mrs J. Whatnall, Mr F. Ferguson. Mr E. Bower. Mr E. Malcolmson, Mr R. Griffiths, Mr R. Ferrall, Mrs D. Kean, Mrs I. Wigley, Mrs S. De Gruchy and Mr K. Keating. The men of the group attended one show, the wives another. During each broadcast the New Zealand representatives were introduced to five million viewers by the master of ceremonies, Mr J. Bailey, who drew attention to a special "New Zealand Show” to be produced soon.. During this special show the producers plan to award the elected queen an all-expenses-paid trip to New Zealand. Scenery, fashions, travel notes and gifts awarded to the winner will incorporate a New Zealand theme. “Queen for a Day” is .one of America’s longest-running programmes. Each day. for more than 18 years, Mr Bailey has placed the crown upon a competitor’s head, marking her “Queen for a Day.” She is then given a number of valuable prizes and one wish, whatever it may be, is granted.
She is also transported about Hollywood points of interest and shops in a chauf-feur-driven limousine and dines at her favourite restaurant.
Lady Wright and a party of four other New Zealand women were taken to several spots in Hollywood by the same chauffeur and gold Chrysler limousine.
