Mhor May Be Hard To Beat At Rangiora

Mhor and Picket galloped well in training at Riccarton on Saturday and will be two interesting fresh runners at Rangiora today.

They are engaged in the Rangiora Handicap, first leg of double on the second day of the North Canterbury Racing Club s meeting.

Mhor has not raced since August 31 when he was favourite and finished fourth in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton. He was third in a tight finish to the Heathcote Handicap, won by Manana, first time out this season, and fourth in the Islington Handicap. won by Palisade. Those two races were at the Grand National meeting. Lately Mhor has done much useful work on the tracks, •nd keenness and fitness has marked each gallop. He is a courageous finisher and will be hard to peg back at a mile and a quarter if he reaches a short lead in or close to home. lii Good Form Picket easily won the two main races at Westport recently. The first of them was at a mile, and the other at a mile and a quarter. The best of his rivals in the second race was Wyebank, which made Westport form look pretty useful with a fourth in the North Canterbury Gold Cup on Friday. Wyebank might still be at the improving stage, but so should Personify, runmer-up to Boundless on Friday. Gay Defoe is racing a stone below his best form and there will be great surprise if he can win this one after a weak run in the gold cup on Friday. Second Leg A peak run from Double would probably give her a decisive victory in the Dr. T. A. Will Memorial Handicap. the second leg of the double. Double is top weight with 9-3, but weight should not

have much bearing over this distance, six furlongs, if she is at her best.

Newbrook and Approval, the first two home in the corresponding race on Friday, are engaged again.

The barrier positions could again help to give Newbrook a slight edge over the Waimate sprinter.

Newbrook has drawn No. 2 and Approval No. 12, and a horse that has the speed to take up and hold a good position alongside the rails at Rangiora often has a marked advantage over those trying to make ground while being forced three wide and wider Picca Leigh and Seaend have drawn well and could improve on their first-day runs, but Gay Filou and Picright appear to need more time and more ground.
