NEW GRASS VARIETIES

Maori Names To Be Used (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 24. Maori names would be given to grasses and legumes developed by the Grasslands Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, it was announced at the Grassland Association conference at New Plymouth today. Applause greeted the announcement, which was made by the division’s chief plant breeder, Dr. P. C. Barclay. The first variety to be named under the new system is a new hybrid ryegrass, which will be called Ariki. Maori names will be given to all the other varieties developed by the Grasslands Division, including its improved varieties of perennial, short-rotation, and Italian ryegrasses, cocksfoot, timothy, white clover, Montgomery, red clover, and cowgrass.
