ALLEGATION OF TORTURE
Postponed Inquest (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) PRETORIA. October 22. A lawyer yesterday sought ian investigation into allegations that a gaoled African found hanged in his cell last month had been tortured. The lawyer. Dr. George Lowen, applied for a postponement of the inquest into the death of an African who had been detained under South Africa's 90-day no-trial law on August 19 and found dead on September 5. The Magistrate agreed to a postponement until October 31. Dr Lowen, represening the widow and other relatives, said the police had refused to send the man's body home for burial. When his mother arrived for the funeral she was told he had already been buried. Mr V. Narinus. for the State, said the man had given information to police that led to other arrests, on the day before he was found. “He realised he had given inferrnataion which could teed to retribution from the persons concerned.” he said.
