America Canada Cup Favourite

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) PARIS, October 23. The international golf scene moves to Europe tomorrow for the 1963 Canada Cup world team championship.

Two-man teams from 33 countries will compete in the 72-hole tournament at the St.-Nom-Labreteche Course, 15 miles from Paris. At stake will be 6900 dollars prize-money for the team and the individual player with the lowest aggregate scores.

Teams driving off in foursomes will play 18 holes on each of four days from tomorrow till Sunday. The 6834-yard, par-72 rolling parkland course is in excellent condition and scoring will be low. Among the more fancied teams are the United States, Australia, England. Argentina, South Africa, Canada and Wales. Australia, for the first time since the tournament was played 10 years ago, will not be represented by either K. D. G. Nagle or P. W. Thomson. They had twice won the Canada Cup—in Montreal in 1954 and in Melbourne in 1959. Sydney Golfers This year two young Sydney golfers, Bruce Crampton, 27, and Bruce Devlin, 25, carry Australia’s hopes. Crampton, who now plays most of his tournament golf in America, and Thomson finished fourth in the team event in Tokyo. New Zealand will be represented by the British Open title-holder, R. J. Charles, and

F. X. Buckler. South Africa will have Gary Player and Retief Waltman, England, Neil Coles and Bernard Hunt, and Argentina. Fidel Luca and Roberto de Vicenzo.

Luca and de Vicenzo won the first Canada Cu.p in 1953 and de Vicenzo last year carried off the individual title. Twice a Winner

But the team most people expect to win is Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. of the United States. Palmer has won just about everything worth winning since 1954 except the United States P.G.A. He has made two Canada Cup appearances—l96o and 1962—and has yet to finish in a losing team. Yesterday, Palmer had his first look at the course and then scored a five-under scratch 67. Nicklaus, fresh from his victory in the Sahara open at Las Vegas on Sunday, is a newcomer to the tournament.

Last year the team title was won by Palmer and Sam Snead.
