TROTTING Wayren Has Chance Of Success At Greymouth
Wayren, a place-getter at the night trials at Addington last week, should graduate from maiden company in either the J. R. Coburn Handicap or the W. Meldrum Handicap at Victoria Park tonight. He will contest the two races for trotters at the opening of the Greymouth Trotting Club’s inaugural night meeting.
As well as being placed at Addington, Wayren has trotted useful races against reasonably strong fields in Canterbury at his other starts this season. Trained by W. E. Taylor, who races him in partnership with Mr F. Percy, Wayren is a five-year-old gelding by Wayfarer from Grenadene. Unless he is unable to handle the track with confidence, he should win at least once on the trip.
Gala Song and Flying Minstrel might be the hardest tor Wayren to beat. Gala Song, a four-year-old in A. R. McKenzie's Harewood team, trotted a useful race for eighth at Motukarara when having his first start at a totalisator meeting. He should have benefited from that race and he should do well at this meeting. Flying Minstrel, after finishing third at Motukarara. was second to Betting Time at the Addington night trials. However, he broke just short of the post and was subsequently disqualified. Flying Minstrel, by Flying Song from Esbekiya, has not finished improving and he should pay expenses at Greymouth. Polydorus has not returned a dividend so far this season,
but she has finished fourth at two of her three starts. She is not too solid, but is capable of surprising. Tau Ceti has been working well enough recently to be considered as a place prospect at the meeting, but if Wayren trots solidly, he should be the brightest prospect tonight.
The double will be run on the A McDonnell Handicap and the T E Coates Handicap. Mile End. Sirretta and Talent form a likely trio in the first leg, while Legendary, Vivace and Charlesworth appeal most in the second. Fair weather is forecast and the track should be in splendid order. The club expects a record crowd tonight and every effort has been made to have sufficient facilities available to cater for it. J R.
