Another Bout for Dion Murphy

ANOTHER fight for Jinn * ' Murphy, the New Zealand professional ' lightweight champion. is being organised by the Canterbury Boxing Association. The bout will be held at Canterbury Court on November 28. but' Murphy’s opponent has not yet been chosen, Murphy, aged 23, married with a young family, has now 1 had eight professional bouts. His first bout was in Hamilton, and then he fought three times in Melbourne. His last four fights have been in Christ-' church. He has won all his bouts as a professional, and all but one of them, against Pacquele Curcio, inside the full distance. Murphy has proved himself a cool, competent boxer: fast on his feet, with a quick left and plenty of power in his right. His most punishing blows are right crosses and hooks, and be varies his right-hand punches well. He can score With- rips to the body as well. His defence looks goad, but it has not been really tried. By chance, most of his opponents in Christchurch have been featherweights. Cassidy was only 11b lighter than Murphy.

but to timing wm so ragged- after a, long time out of -the ring that he did hot test Murphy’s defence at aJL • A hard-hitting Tongan with a string of - knock-out victories to to credit may be Murphy’s next opponent. The Tongan cannot speak English and bringing his trainer to Christchurch *fth him tor one bout may make the proposal uneconomic. The president of the Canterbury Boxing Association and. its matchmaker (Mr E. G. Pocock) w trying to sign up a rated Australian light-weight to meet Mur. phy should the Tongan negotiations fall through. A return bout with Curcio. with Curcio's trainer, Ambrose Pahoer, m the new Australian's ’ corner, is a third possibility■ Curcio wants a bout of IS rounds, and is confident that with Palmer in his corner he can beat Murphy. Murphy has proved ' a drawcard for the Canterbury association, and the association has • certainly looked after Murphy. A thorough testing of Murphy by a good light-weight would not only attract a large crowd ' ot spectators, but would also give an indication of Murphy’s true ability.
