L PLATES ON CARS

Safety Body’s Suggestion

A suggestion that some form of learner plates should be attached to cars when drivers were being instructed was made at last nigrt’s meeting of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee. Mr D. W. Currie said some professional instructors already indicated in some way that they were teaching. Motor-cycling organisations instigated learner plates and motor-cyclists learning to ride were given some latitude, said Mr A. J. Luxton. He supported the suggestion, but said parents who had been driving for some years would not want an L plate attached to their car.

The Christchurch City Council's Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F. Thomas) said any instructor, whether professional or not. should have an Bin. by Bin plate with L on it displayed to the rear of the car. In Australia Lt was an offence if it was not displayed. Mr Thomas said some driving schools opposed the idea on the ground that pupils under instruction would not meet the same traffic hazards if a plate was displayed.

The committee decided to approach the Commissioner

of Transport with the proposal that an L plate be displayed to the rear of all cars when driven were being instructed.
