DEMOLITION OF STAND
Worjt To Begin Tomorrow The demolition of the old No. 3 grandstand at Lancaster Park will begin tomorrow, and tenders will be called for the demolition of two houses in Wilsons road which are in the way of the proposed new stand. 'Die Victory Park Board was officially informed last night that the building permit for the new stand had been approved by the City Council, subject to conditions laid down by the Chief Fire Officer and the City Health Inspector. A total of 32 seats out of the 4948 planned for the new stand will be removed to comply with the fire officer’s requirements. The board also approved a scheme presented by the chairman of the building committee (Mr H. C. Blazey). which provides for terraced seating between No. 2 and No. 3 stand. This would be extended and roofed if and when property adjacent to the park was available, and would eventually provide for a continuous stand from No 1 to No. 4 stand, Mr Blazey said. The additions will provide for 870 seats in the interim.
The board also decided to ask its engineer to examine the likely cost of demolishing other houser behind No. 3 stand which are owned by the board. These would have to be moved anyway, to make room for the new stand, and demolition would probably be more economical, as well as making room for an improved entrance to the park, said Mr D. A. Colville. A ground plan of the cleared area will be drawn up, with sketches for its possible utilisation. Mr J. C. Saunders suggested that squash courts and an indoor cricket school would be a worth-while addition to the park’s sporting facilities.
