EXTRA VOTE FOR POWER
Meremere And Manapouri f Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct 23. Questions about items of £750,000 tor the Manapouri scheme and £300,000 for the Meremere power station, both in the Supplementary Estimates, were asked in Parliament tonight by the DeputyLeader of the Opposition (Mr Watt)
"What is Involved in this extra money for Manapouri? Why was it not foreseen, I assume the Meremere money is for extra coal. Where is it coming from, Huntly or Meremere? Has the agreement with Glen Afton been amended?” He said that if the levels of Taupo were not watched, there would be power shortages soon.
The Minister of Electricity (Mr Goosman) said the extra money for Manapouri came from the employment of the Wanganella. In the contract, £2.278,000 was provided for establishment and initial work. When the Wanganella was pressed into service, this money had to be provided more quickly. The £300,000 for Meremere was for extra coal. Meremere was being used to avoid overdrawing on the northern lakes. The estimate was approved.
