Meandering Keen In Mile Trial
If looks count for much the veteran Meandering has not come to the end of his solid patch of form. He looked well and galloped well in training at Riccarton yeaterday in his final test for speed before tomorrow's Rangiora Gold Cup It was thought that Meandering would go much too keenly, for the apprentice B. D. Collins, so C. M. Williams, who weighs over 10-0 was his rider in a fast mile on the No. 8 grass. Meandering started at a great rate. He reeled off the first two furlongs tn 34 4-ssec and the first five In Imin 3 4-Ssec. In the home straight he was running into a stiff, cold breeze, and ms pace fell away near the post, but he still recorded Imin 44 4-seec for the mite. There will be none more seasoned than Meandering in the Rangiora Gold Cup field and 1 ard condition might count for mudi if it is « truly-run race. Two of the moat impressive of the lesser lights were the stablemates Apache (Reritii and Bodkin (MeCann). which hurried over six furlongs in Imin 15 3-5 sec. and appeared to do it well. They were up to high speed quickly and sprinted the opening three furlongs in 36 l-seec Apache is fit for a fresh start at the North Canterbury meeting- .
speed, though His Host (Collins) showed fair ability to run six furlongs in Imin M l-ssec in a chase after General Gilbert (Penrose i and On Account (Swanson), which broke away clear. However His Host was sore after cooling out and a* start on the first day at ftongiora seems unlikely. K. J Thomson said yesterday that Studio was a doubtful starter in the North Canterbury Gold Cup Canadians may drop out of the Ronald Macdonald Handicap. leaving Cheyenne to run for the Clutterbuck stable. Few at the others tried on this track worked up much
