HELP GIVEN AIRLINE

Grounds For Concession (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 23. An assurance that the Mount Cook and Southern Lakes Tourist Company would be considered for similar concessions to those received by S.P.A.N.Z.—if it provided him with financial information similar to that given by S.P.A.N.Z.—was given by the Minister of Civil Aviation (Mr McAlpine) in Parliament today. Replying to a question by Sir Basil Arthur (Opp., Timarut, Mr McAlpine said the assistance the Government gave S.P.A.N.Z. was considered in the light of that company’s need for it, apart from, and in addition to, the part it played in providing air services and encouraging tourism.

Sir Basil Arthur: Does this mean that an airline has to get into difficulties before it can be assisted?

The question was disallowed.

Mr N. E. Kirk (Opp., Lyttelton): Whet assurance has the Government of getting its money back if S.P.A.N.Z. fails to meet its commitments?

Mr McAlpine: We shall meet that contingency if. or when, it arises. (Opposition laughter).
