DEMAND FOR LABOUR
Increase This Week
The number of job® offering for unskilled labour increased considerably in the Christchurch district early this week, said the district
superintendent of the Labour Department, Mr C. P. Collins, yesterday. “We had to try to find 60 unskilled labourers for jobs on Monday morning,” he said. “There were, of course, plenty/ of jobs available for skilled Labourers. No doubt the spring boom in jobs is here.”
Mr Collins said the opening of the killing season at two Christchurch district freezing works on Monday had created a demand for labour. The Post Office, he said, had asked for 30 unskilled men and the Forestry Service had several vacancies. The Nassella Tussock Board also had quite a few jobs offering. “The present demand for labour is considerable.” he said. There was no real demand for farm labour but there were a few odd vacancies. The demand for factory workers had been slight. Mr Collins said it was the tendency for builders to tackle foundation jobs at this time of the year, because they were diffir It and unpleasant in the wet weather. There were fewer unemployed right throughout 1963. than throughout 1962. “The unemployment position is considerably better now than it was at this time last year,” he said.
