Series Of Small Fires
Continued fine weather brought another serif's of minor fires, caused mainly by sparks in dry vegetation, in Christchurch yesterday. The Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R. Osmond* said that persons should be very careful in burning rubbish. At 3 p.m. a spark from a welding unit caused a small fire in the store and workshop at the Lyttelton Harbour Board's cool stores on No. 7 wharf. Two units from the Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade answered the call. The fire caused only slight damage. At 4.32 p.m., firemen from the St. Albans station attended a grass fire on railway property between Northcote road and Tuckers road. The fire was put out before it caused any damage. Two minutes later, firemen from the Sydenham station were called to a tree on fire on a property occupied by Mr Kenneth Frederick Parr at 16 Ward street. The fire caused no damage to property.
Two fire engines from the New Brighton volunteer brigade were called to a scrub fire at 118 Marlon road. The fire caused no damage. Three-quarters of a chain of fencing was burned in a fire at 59 Wrights road, on property occupied by Mr John William Allan. An engine from the Sydenham station answered the alarm, given at 6.25 p.m.
