“TOO MUCH BOOZE”

Rationing At Tin Hat Club

“Too much booze” was being consumed at the monthly tattoos of the Christchurch R.S.A. Tin Hat Club, its president, Mr J. K. Davidson, told 500 members and guests in the Caledonian Hall last night He then announced to members that the club’s committee had decided that at all future tattoos beer for the evening would be rationed at one bottle a man.

“There has been comment as to the amount of liquor consumed in the club,” said Mr Davidson. “If anyone wants their own bottle, now is the time. The committee has looked at this for some time, and feels we should get a little closer to making ends meet.

“Our position has not been particularly stable from that point of view—it is obvious why if any one has a look. The answer is: ‘There is too much booze. That is all.’” Mr Davidson said he thought that he would have the support of members when he said that by the time everyone had had his bottle of beer to himself (the ration that had been decided) his cup of tea and supper, the fluid content of all members at the end of an evening would be “adequate for our requirements.” Mr Davidson’s announcement was greeted with handclaps. boos. laughter and finally a prolonged buzzing of voices, as the members discussed the announcement.

Many hands reached out for the single bottle of beer that had been placed previously in front of each member around small tables.

‘"lbis is the end,” said one.
