Date Set For Industrial Zoning Appeal
The Christchurch PoetPrimary Schools’ Council will give evidence before the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board on November I. to support its objection to the proposed industrial zone adjacent to the future secondary school site in Breens road.
The council was informed of the date of the appeal at its meeting last evening. A letter from the Education Department suggested that the council should present the evidence as it was more closely associated with the objection. Several meetings and discussions had been held over the matter, and there was a quantity of evidence to be prepared, said the act-ing-chairman (Dr C D Ellyett).
The secretary of the council (Mr P J Halligan) and Dr. Elyett were asked to prepare the information. The council decided last night that it could find nothing unsatisfactory in the district planning scheme of the Paparua County Council The pian is intended to provide for 20 years' growth in the county fror- 1956 to 1976 during which time the population should increase from 15895 » 1961 to 30019 tn 1976 fhe only established secondary school in the county
area was Riccarton High School ~hich was already built around, said Mr Halligan The board of governors had no comments to offer on the proposed plan The only matter to be watched at the Hornby future site was that the school entrance should be kept off the main road when the time came to build, and this should be allowed for, said Dr Ellyett. He had doubts about the future of ti e large shingle pit adjacent to the school site “It is being filled by the co’inty council with flies.” said Professor A Crowther “They put hundreds of tens of flies into it every summer and as they die they are gradually filling it up In other wards, it is a rubbish tip. It should take a long time to ft and settle” The council would have to watch that the pit was not zoned as industrial at any time in the future, in view of current objections to such zoning, aacd Mr N. E Taylor
