Whineray Mixes Exams And Rugby
(From T, P McLEAN, Sports Editor of the "New Zealand Herald"]
OXFORD. Oct. 22. These are busy days, in more ways than one. for the All Black captain. W. J. VVhineray. As leader of the team he has much on his mind, particularly in these early days when the welding of the side’s talents into a harmonious combination is of the first importance to the success of the tour. But Whineray is also a student of Auckland University and he is shortly to be engaged with three papers for one of the important units of the Bachelor of Commerce degree he has been studying for the last four years. He is to sit the first of these papers next Tuesday, the day before the AH Blacks' match in Wales against Newport—a team which often in the past has troubled the All Blacks A little later he has an engagement with another paper on the morning of the All Blacks' match with another Welsh side, Abertillerv and Ebbw Vale. The third paper is to be taken in London next month. The difficulties of com-
bining study with the requirements of a Rugby tour are only too obvious. but Whineray of recent times has passed various units and played a large number of representative matches. He has. In fact, not yet been ploughed in a subject and, having taken terms this year, he has his fingers crossed in the hope that he will once more be successful.
It may be debated that be is New Zealand’s greatest Rugby captain; it eould never be debated that no other captain has set a more inspiring example by so splendidly combining work with play.
