TRAFFIC IN AVENUE
Flyover Relief “Temporary” The flyover bridge in Moorhouse avenue at the Colombo street intersection will provide only limited temporary relief; and the grade separation provided by the bridge is not a major part of any development, says an engineering report submitted to the city council. Regardless of the flyover, the council is recommended to encourage the use of existing alternative routes. To relieve the congestion the report suggests:— 1. Realignment of the intersection of Waltham road and Barbadoes street.
2. Encouragement of the use of the Strickland streetAntigua street route. To achieve the latter objective it is suggested that there be traffic signals at the Moorhouse avenue-Antigua street intersection, signposting at the Strickland street-Colombo street corner, use of stop signs to encourage the through use ot Antigua street, and a bridge between Antigua street and Rolleston avenue To ease the difficult link between Strickland and Antigua streets would involve taking some very old properties and some new construction, the report says. Intersections between Colombo street and Lincoln road give no cause for imme■):ate concern, the report says There is need to examine further grade separation to the east. Grade separations at Manchester and Madras street' are not possible because of re'*rtcted carriageway widths A continuously-elevated roadwav from Colombo street to Waltham road is examined, but the report says this does not provide a so'ution.
Encouragement should be » ; ven to the use of the Onawa road-Wilsons road-Lismo-e street - Falsgrave street route.
