RACING Strong Gallop By Rely At Trentham

"The Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON, Ort. 22. Two light-weights in next Saturday’s Watkins Handicap drew attention to their fitness when they worked at Trentham today. They were The Nob, which went an easy half-mile on the course proper, and Rely, which galloped strongly over ‘seven lurlongs on the plough. The hack. Cambeg. went quickly over hail a mile In the fastest time of the morning and die maidens Fast Lad and Magic Mirror also returned good figure*. > There was, however, little galloping, as most of the horses had raced on Saturday. AU tracks were fast. On the course proper The Nob (Cullen) and hi* stablemate Velvet (Jones) were required to do little better than three-quarter pace. They ran together from the half-mile in 57, the last three furlongs in 41. Both were under strong hold*. The Nob was not far away at the finish of the Wainui Handicap, one mile, last Week, and should now be ready for his first middle-distance race of the season in the Watkins Handicap, one mile and three furlongs. He will be ridden by N. East wood, whose mount, Robin Adair, was eliminated.

Velvet, a game hack winner over one mile last week, seems to have thrived. She Is to contest the Desert Gold Stakes over the same distance this week.

Town Talk (Medcalfe) went at a swinging pace over six furlongs, the last five In 1:10 1-5, the four in 54 and three in 39 2-5.

Though Town Talk was scratched on the first day, there was nothing wrong with him and he has done weU since he raced at Masterton. Sir Barton (Hercock) wag not asked for speed. He impressed in his work and ran the last three furlongs in 40. He had a poor run in the Wainui Handicap. but the race has improved him. Went Evenly Lads' York (Grylls) started from the mile and went evenly to the post, the last half in 57 and the three in 42. She looks in great order, but failed in her first-day race. The maidens Fair Elizabeth (Grylls) and Boulevard (Worrell) galloped three furlongs In 38. On the plough Rely (Riordan) created a good impression over a mile. She was doing it easily down the back, but recorded 1:33 for the last seven furlongs. and came brilliantly from the three furlongs In 36. Rely was eliminated from the Wellington Handicap, but is in the Watkins Handicap, in which she will be ridden by V. Tinsley. On the same track Aloft (Goss) went rapidly over half a mile in 50 3-5, the last three furlongs in 36 3-5. He finished well at Masterton at his last start. Carnbeg (A. T. Jones) galloped a brilliant half-mUe on the course proper in 49 1-5, coming from the three furlongs in 36 1-5. His Masterton race, the first after a spell, has done him good.

Also on the course proper, Fast Lad (Riordan) and Magic Mirror (Grylls), rivals for the Trial Stakes, were together after a solid five furlongs in 1:5 1-5, the last half-mile in 50 1-5 and the three furlongs in 37 1-5.

Magic Mirror, which appeared to have a slight edge on her

companion, has run three good races in three starts this season without having any luck in any of them. Down the chute Tampa (Tyacke) and Shiloko (Wylie) went easily from the half-mile in 55. increasing pace only from the two furlongs in 26. What must have been brilliant time over the same ground was run by the two-year-old Mieke de Hoep (A. T. Jones) which beat her Karitane Handicap rival Clipjoint

IN. Riordan) by a length and a half. They started at the three furlongs and a half, but there is no three furlong peg on this track so they could not be timed. Mieke de Hoep was well clear at the furlong but Clipjoint, which was running greenly, made up about three lengths in the last furlong. A filly by Chatsworth II from Sarina. Clipjoint has had one start, for a third behind Sobig at Ellerslie. She is to start only once at this meeting. Count One, which seemed in a bad way on Monday, is making a good recovery from an infection in his foot, and there is now a chance that he will be able to start in the Pearce Handicap on Labour Day.
