N.Z. CLOTHING CONFERENCE RETURNS TO HANMER
The present conference at the New Zealand Textile and Garment Manufacturers’ Federation is the first to be held in the South Island since 1957. These were to have been held alternately in the North and South Islands, but these plans were upset by the destruction of the Lodge by fire.
The rebuilt Lodge again provides an ideal venue for the conference and the clothing trade group of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Assiciation is again acting as host to the national conference.
On Saturday evening, the annual dinner at the federation was held, and the Associate Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton) addressed the delegates and officially opened the conference. The president of the national body, Mr L. H. Govan, of Christchurch, delivered his presidential address. Yesterday the annual meestings of the eight constatuent trade groups were held, so that all delegates will be free to attend the main sessions which start today. Prominent among the matters for discussion today and tomorrow will be the clothing industry’s participation in the export drive. Several New Zealand cloth-
tog manufacturers have been exporting their products successfully for a number of years, with Canterbury firms among the leaders in this matter. Another matter of considerable public interest will be a report on the progress being
i made by the garment-sizing • committee of the New Zea- ' land Standards Institute. This i committee is working on the i provision of standard size scales of measurements and ■ size designations for all types i of garments being produced ! in New Zealand factories.
