TIMPSON ATTACKS

Hastings In Form Again EAST-SHIRLEY 116. WEST-UNIVERSITY 188/9 After another very useful opening stand, this time for 53. East Christchurch-Shirley failed miserably against the lefthand spin of A. C. Timpson and the seductively flighted offbreaks of P. A. Sharp. At the start of the innings, B. A. Haworth. S. R Home and extras moved the score along steadily, but once the opening stand was broken, only extras made Very mucp progress, and they topped the score, with 35. There was. however, a sensible innings bv C. K. Smart who. with I. D. Shewan. scored 47 for tile ninth wicket.

Bartlett had another unhappy time, but his arm was straighter, he used his body more effectively, and there were times when the batsmen had to defend desperately. Howarth, a stoic little batsman, was usually at Bartlett’s end. and he batted very competently.

Timpson had one of his best days. His length, flight and spin exposed grave deficiencies in the batting, and he was supported by alert fielding. G. T. Dowling taking a particularly good catch at mid-off. West Christchurch-University needed only 69 runs, and after an early reverse. Dowling and B. F. Hastings brought tile team home with an aggressive and attractive partnership. Hastings, who scored 90 in his first innings, again middled the ball from the start, and made some most agreeable strokes. There were a few stashes off Smart which did not look authentic, but Hastings is clearly in extremely good form. The umpires were Messrs J. Streeter and R. Conway.
