Park Wins But On The Defensive
Laneaster Park's very slowness m batting contributed to its difficulty in beating Sydenham. by three wickets, at Sydenham Park. With much of the day to compile 133 to win. Lancaster Park was very much on the defensive tor the early part of its innings. Then the game closed up completely with a ■careless period against the Sydenham attack of D. Gallop •nd B Salt. It was not until the last hour of play that the eventual victory far Lancaster Park seemed likely. The warming runs were •coned by D. J. McKendry at 5.35 p.m. after an minings which lasted four hours. . Lancaster Park thus came from behand to win. having trailed Sydenham by 20 runs on the first innings. The captain, R. T. Dowker. other 6 in the match, and seemed ready for a solid innings. Sydenham’s innings closed at 12.35 p.m. far 112, giving Lancaster Park 133 to make for a win. The result was very open at this stage, and for much of the remainder of the day because this score was beyond the side fast week in reply to Sydenham’s modest total. With eight runs up, B. Ellis, who had batted soundly in the first innings, was unexpectedly run out when Salt hit the wicket with a return from the outfield. Duckmanton was Lancaster Park’s only salvation in the first half of the batting order, and his dismissal after scoring 24 gave Sydenham the edge at this stage. Salt claimed his wicket, lbw. and soon after had Smith dismissed when K. Thomson took the best catch of the game, on the boundary, from a lofted straight drive. Salt at this stage had three wickets for five runs. Dowker’s 39 took nearly two hours. He contented himself to Play with caution, and fortunately for his team he was joined after an hour by MeKendry. Both batsmen held out Sydenham’s attack, and the runs came more freely, but still with some restraint, over the last half hour. Anderson, for Lancaster Park, once more gave an excellent display of wicketkeeping. His speed led to two more stumpings and a catch, giving him seven dismissals for the game. He conceded no extras.
