RECOGNISING CHINA
‘Consideration By De Gaulle’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright). PARIS, Oct 19. President de Gaulle is seriously considering recognising China, according to reliable reports in Paris, the British United Press reported. He might establish normal diplomatic relations with Peking, if he could still maintain relation? with the Chinese Nationalists on Formosa, it was believed. French officials denied knowledge of any imminent action.
Mr Guillaume GeorgesPicot, a retired French diplomat of great experience and former Ambassador to the United Nations, headed a recent French businessmen’s mission to China. He was briefed by President de Gaulle personally before leaving. Mr Edgar Faure, a former Prime Minister, is now paying his second visit to China. He also had a long private talk with President de Gaulle before leaving for Peking. It has been reported unofficially that Mr Faure might become the first French Ambassador in Peking.
