Sanctions Against France
Sir, —Nearly everyone is agreed that French atom bomb testing in the Pacific should be opposed. CN.D. and Labour Party policy is
to apply economic sanctions. These are apposed by another school of opinion who regard sanctions as useless and costly. To do toe right thing is surely correct, and expediency and tacit acceptance of defeat is not a good argument. An interesting parallel is seen in toe decision of toe Israeli Cabinet to cut off Israel’s trade relations with South Africa as a protest against apartheid. It could be a costly decision, because Dr. Verwoerd could quite easily take it out on South African Jews. Israel also receives about £4,000,000 from South African Jews each year. This could be stopped. Israel’s chances of affecting South Africa’s apartheid policy seem futile, but they have done toe right thing. Let us do the right thing and apply sanctions against France.— Yours, etc., C. M. CURTIS. October 16, 1963.
