Deaconesses ' Work

(NZ. Press Association) NAPIER, Oat. 16. Deaconesses were already rare birds, but they should not be allowed to become as dead as dodos. They should be encouraged to rise again like the Phoenix, said Deaconess E. E. Lewis, of Christchurch, to the Waiapu Synod last evening. Deaconess Lewis, who wore a simple blue frock and a large cross on a chain round her neck—the uniform of the order—spoke to the Synod for more then an hour. She said her aim was for a national school for training deaconesses and women who wanted to serve the Church in other ways. She sought permission to visit the diocese and address groups of women to interest them in the ministry (not the priesthood) of the Church.
