AMERICAN EXPORTS
Substantial Increase
(N.ZPA.-Reuter— Copyright) WASHINGTON, October 15.
American merchandise exports reached a record high annual rate of about £9586 million in the first half of 1963 and were going higher in the second half, the Commerce Department said today. Exports are expected to advance into 1964 -as economic growth continues in the industrial countries and liberalisation of trade barriers moves ahead.
“There is also some evidence that the competitive advantage of the United States may be improving,” the department says, and cites higher wages in Japan and Western Europe as one of the contributing factors.
A summary lists 1963 gains in exports in every area of the world, except Latin America.
Even in Latin America there is a trend away from the steady decline of purchases from the United States over several years. Both Mexico and Brazil made substantial increases in imports from the United States in the first half of 1963.
