“I have been asked by hundreds of constituents, particularly in the industrial constituency at the city, to be the people's candidate.” he said ”1 think it would be grand to have at least one independent in the House of Representatives.’ ’
Mr Armstrong said the hundreds of requests for h.m to stand tied come by telephone and letters. “I would not ask the people what party they subscribed to,” be said.
At the age of 22. he said, he was elected to the Christchurch City Council as an independent. "I claim I was a real Labour man and not a milk-and-water one,” he said. Mr Armstrong was Labour member of Parliament for Napier between 1943 and 1951. He is a former secretary of ttie Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated
Society of Railway Servants. "It s more than 10 years since i was in Parliament.” he said. "Everyone should come back after a tens years. ”
