WELLINGTON, October 16. Grants of £267,826 for the faculties of veterinary science, general studies and science at Massey University College have been approved, the Minister of Education (Mr 'lennent) announced today.
"This w-.H enable the ex* pansion of Massey, after its .s.rmlation of the Palmers-
ton North branch of Victoria University into a fuU, autor. >nomous university with a range of faculties and the : ght to confer its own degrees,” said Mr Tennent.
The college officially bec ames Massey University of Manawata from January 1 1964
The grant to the veterinary ence faculty. £BB,OOO, for
running costs during the year beginning April 1, 1964. and a non-recurring amount of £56.880 for equipment, will be the second allocation made to it.” said Mr Tennent.
Preparation has been going on, mainly in the department of veterinary biology, for next year’s teaching while preliminary planning for 1965 and subsequent years has also been in hand in the departments of animal health and clinical sciences. "The course in veterinary biology will be available in
temporary quarters by March, 1964, when 32 students begin their first professional year’s training,” said Mr Tennent. The veterinary grant would be included in the fiveyearly block grant made to Massey University, thus bringing it into line with the other universities.
The present annual grant to the new general studies faculty was £60,946. This would be increased by £47.000 to meet the cost of additional staff, including appointments to four new chairs in arts and two in sciences, as well as the running expenses involved.
“It has always been the" intention to strengthen the arts department at Palmerston North to make it into an academic unit capable of advanced work and of attracting good quality staff,” said Mr Tennent.
"The increased grants will serve this purpose and. as with the science subjects, help to relieve to some extent the increasing pressure on the four metropolitan universities.
To promote these developments a non-recurring grant of £ 15.000 to meet the establishment costs of new subjects had also been authorised. The plans for expansion of the general studies faculty would considerably broaden the present rather restricted range of subjects. said Mr Tennent.
