Sportsman’s Notebook Mongolia Will Be New To Olympics
.Next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games Is already assured of a record entry. It may alto be the first Olympics at which Mongolia will be represented. According to a leading official, Mongolia, which was admitted to the International Olympic Committee in 1961, hopes to enter in the winter and summer games, at skiing. skating, athletics, freestyle wrestling, and archery. When Mongolia achieved its independence in 1923 few Western and other Asian sports were recognised. The traditional sports were national wrestling, archery and horae racing. Now 18 new sports, ineluding athletics, boxing, table tennis, baseball, lawn tennis and gymnastics, have been developed. The Mongolian Sports Union, which has a membership of 85,000, controls 24
sports associations. Its aim is to reach international standards and encourage more people to take up sport. This year Mongolian teams were sent to the world speed skating championships in Japan and to the world freestyle wrestling championships In Sofia.
Kickers* Draw Since leaving New Zealand, the Los Angeles Kickers soccer team has played one match in Hong Kong. In a thrilling game before a good crowd the match resulted in a 4-4 draw. While in Australia, enroute to Hong Kong, the team was the guest of the Australian council at the Sydney club final. * * ♦ Experienced Official Mr C. A. Blazey, who. with Mr T. C. Morrison, will represent the New Zealand Rugby Union at a meeting of the International Rugby Board in London in January to discuss changee to the Rugby laws, is one of the most experienced administrators in New Zealand sport He has represented Canterbury on the New Zealand Rugby Union Council for many years and has been a member of the executive for six years. At present he is convener of the laws committee. Mr Blazey played Rugby for Canterbury University, but his playing career was stopped by an injury when he was 19. However, he has never lost his contact with University Rugby and has been chairman of the New Zealand Universities Rugby Council for the last 19 years. He has reached prominence in another major sport—athletics. He is a former president of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. ** , * Otago Selectors The former Otago allrounder. Mr L D. Smith, has been appointed an Otago Plunket Shield selector for this season. Mr Smith will replace one of last year's selectors. G. H. Mills, whom he beat in a ballot for the position.
The other two selectors will be Mr J. Heslop, a member of last year’s panel, and J. C. Alabaster, who replaces G, W. Overton.
