MEETING OF CREDITORS
Married Couple’s Bankruptcy
Ralph Rodney Wahrlich, aged 52, a boarding-house proprietor, had debts of £1445 4s 3d and assets of £BO, which left a deficiency of £1365 4s 3d. the Official Assignee (Mr P. D. Clancy) told a meeting of creditors. Wahrlich’s wife, Gertrude Wahrltoh, with whom in ' parnerahip he ran the boarding-house, had debts of £1426 19s 3d. She had assets of £BO and the deficiency was £1346 19s 3d. Both were adjudged bankrupt on October 8. Wahrlich attributed his bankruptcy to ill-health and his subsequent inability to carry out his duties in the business. Also, he said, he took on the business under unfavourable terms. He and his wife took a four-year lease of a boarding-house at 257 Armagh street at the end of October, 1959. At first business was reasonably good, he said. After about four months he had to enter the sanatorium. He expected to be there for about four months, but his stay extended to more than a year. He underwent two major chest operations. His wife had to carry on the business and had to employ labour, which proved
unecomonical. The business operated at a loss, as he had to make loan repayments for the first two years. In addition his wife was also in bad health, and underwent a minor operation. He was discharged from the sanatorium in April, 1961.
Because of the way things were shaping, Wahrlich said he explained the position to tradesmen to whom they owed money. There were 15 unsecured creditors. Both he and his wife were in the boarding-house business for about three years and a quarter.
Asked about his present employment, Wahrlich said he was doing part-time clerical work. Unless his health improved he felt he would not be justified in making any promises of payment. Mrs Wahrlich agreed with her husband on toe causes of toe faUnre of toe bcsndwwhouse business. She said that she, too, had a part-time job.
