W.C.T.U. HOLDS CONVENTION
Delegates Meet At Waimate (From Out Own Reporter) WAIMATE, October 10. Some 20 delegates from Christchurch. Ashburton, Tisnaru and Waimate met tn Knox Hall, Wadmate, for the annual Canterbury district convention of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. Mrs W. Duckett, president of the Waimate union, presided, and welcomed delegates and friends. In her opening address she said: “As the sun sends out rays of light so we must send out rays of light too: rays of love, kindnes. cheerfulness and sympathy.” Welcomes were also given by the Mayoress (Mrs A. J. Mcßae) and the president of the National Council of Women (Miss E. R. Puttick). Mrs H. A. F. Wood. Dominion superintendent of visual aid, spoke of her work, demonstrating it with models. In the annual reports presented. South Canterbury was shown to have three unions and North Canterbury nine unions, all doing good work. Several members have been presented with 20 or 30year service badges. The union in Bryndwr is protesting against a proposed hotel or licensed motel in Aranuri.
Other unions have sent protests about nuclear testing and suppression of names in court cases where drinking or drugs are the couse of an offence.
The Timaru union maintains the Sailors’ Rest, where there is an average of 360 visiting seamen a month.
