N.Z.—Australia Talks To Decide Golf Circuit
T (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 10. Discussions between New Zealand and Australian golf administrators in the next fortnight will help to decide the programme of golf in New Zealand next year.
Proposals were made at a meeting of the New Zealand Golf Council in Wellington today for improving the standard of match play. They included the separation of the Open and amateur championships, combining the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament and the amateur championships, and changing the time of the amateur championships to November or early December. The proposal to combine the Freyberg and the amateur received little support from council members, who consid-
ered that the combined tournaments would take too long to play off, besides not providing enough match play for the competitors. The other proposals were dependent upon the outcome of the discussions in Australia and will be considered at the next council meeting in September.
The 1964 North Island championships will be played at the Denby Links, Whangarei, the council decided, but the date will be dependent upon any changes that may be made in the national programme in December. The council also agreed to the setting up of a 13-man co-ordinating committee for sponsored tournaments. The committee will comprise three members from the New Zealand Golf Association. three members from the Professional Golfers’ Association, and one representative from each of the sponsoring companies. The three golf association members will be Messrs G. P. Roberts, D. O. Whyte, and J. G. Slade.
