SURVEY ON ACCIDENTS
Cycling Major Factor (NZ. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. A Transport Department survey of road accidents involving school-children in - dicates that cycling is a major factor. Excluding passengers in motor vehicles, 1070 children from five to 15 years were killed or injured on New Zealand roads last year, according to the report. In 385 cases the children were pedestrians and the other 685 were cyclists. Only 325 were hunt when they would be going to or from school—B-9 am., 12-1 pm. and 3-4 pm. on weekdays. A more detailed analysis of 200 accidents showed that only four took place outside schools, and only another five within a quartter-of-a-mile of the school. “It seems clear that children are relatively safe while dose to school, and any improvements made to safety of children near schools can have only a very limited effect,” states the report, which wias prepared at the request of the Road Safety Council. Proposals contained in the report were placed before the Child Education and Publicity sub-committee of the council this week.
