TROTTING Vanderford And Lakeda For Double At Forbury
Vanderford won so impressively at Ashburton last week that his penalty’ of 12 yards over an extra furlong should not stop him winning again at Forbury Park tomorrow night. He will start from 24 yards and receive a start of 24 yards from Cadigan Bay in the G. J. Barton Memorial Handicap, the first leg of the double on the first night of the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s spring meeting.
Vanderford, unbeaten in his last seven races and the early favourite for the New Zealand Cup next month, is in rare form at present Unless luck in the running goes against him tomorrow, he should beat Cardigan Bay for a second time.
Cardigan Bay lost few supporters when beaten at Ashburton. His performance was one of the finest seen for some time. If different driving tactics are allowed by his connexions, he could still overcome his awkward handicap and bring Vanderford’s winning sequence to an end.
Robin Dundee suggested an early wan when she outfinished Cardigan Bay for second at Ashburton. She has paced some ot her finest races art Forbury Park and if favoured with a good trail to the straight she could again run the favourites ctoee.
Master Alan and Orerti were a shade disappoinfimg when they finished sixth and seventh respectively at Ashburton Both horses were running on strongly and the extra furlong tomorrow should suit them.
King Hal and Sun Chief should both improve sufficiently as a result, of their
races at Ashburton to add interest to the finish here, while Urrall’s fourth at Ashburton entitles him to consideration.
Betting will be well spread in the second leg, the Telegraph Handicap, a race in which more than half of the runners have shown form of note this season.
Lakeda, which has raced impressively on the course earlier in her career, is selected to win. She looked unlucky at Addington in August when she recorded a third and a fifth. There are few speedier pacers about than this Oamaru-owned and
trained daughter of U. Scott.
Rustic Lad has twice finished second to Vanderford this season, while he was unlucky to finish only sixth in the Methven Cup ait his most recent start. He showed that he had retained top form when he won art the Ashburton trials on Tuesday. He will not be set an easy task from 12 yards, but should be promdnenit. Chiffon has won at two of her four starts this season. She has improved considerably since being trained by F. E. Newfield and could well extend her record in this race. Adios Heather, the New Brighton winner, Winona, and
