Hill Slip Feared

Authorities started to empty the dam 10 days ago because a landslide had been noted moving down the mountainside at the rate of about 16 inches a day, Reuter said.

The-intention was to have the dam completely emptied by about tihe middle of November. The water level before the disaster was about 65 feet below the maximum. The reservoir was four miles long, and 440 yards wide.

“Practically an entire mountain fell into the reservoir." one official said.

An engineer of the Societa Adriatica di Elettricita. which built the dam. said the landslide was of tremendous proportions, probably measuring 50.000 cubic yards of rock.
