COUNTRY WORK AVAILABLE
Higher Turnover Of Labour
Plenty of country work was available for single men, toe district superintendent of title Department of Labour, Mr C. P. Collins, said yesterday. There had been a much greater turnover of labour tor September this year than toe same month last year.
Unemployment last month was about toe same as September last year. The reason for toe increased turnover last month, said Mr Collins. was that there was more work.
There were 102 persons unemployed in toe Christchurch district last month. These comprised 86 men (54 on unemployment benefit) and 16 women (12 on unemployment benefit).
The department last month placed 171 men and 27 women in jobs. The main demand for local labour, he said, was in toe building and allied trade. In the retail trade there was very little demand for labour.
The manufacturing trades had a continuous shortage of skilled labour and some demand for semi-skilled labour. Manufacturers showed little interest in unskilled workers.
