Cost Against Purchase (Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 26. The Government would be willing to buy wheat from North Amerloa provided the factors tihiait needed to be considered favoured this course ait a particular time, the Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) told Parliament today. Mr J. B. Gordon (Government, Clutha) had asked whether, if tihiis year's South Island crop proved below expectations, wheat couid be imported from North America and so establish reciprocal trade with an area in which New Zealand had a favourable trade batanoe. Mir Shelton said the Government did bear in mind reciprocal! trade possibilities when it was necessary to import wheat. But it also considered other factors, including compainaitive costs of obtaining wheat from different sources of supply, continuity of supply and types of wheat needed.

Taking ail factors into account, particularly cost, the Government had for some time continued to approve buying supplies from Australia..
