Magistrate’s Court Month In Prison For Driving When Disqualified

Istvan Bazi. aged 33, a fitter and turner, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment sifter he pleaded guilty before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to a charge of driving while disqualified. .Another year was added to his term of prohibition from driving. DISQUALIFIED DRIVER REMANDED Released from prison on Wednesday, Kevin Peter Sim, aged 22, was arrested early yesterday morning for driving while disqualified, the Court was told. After pleading guilty, Sim was remanded in custody to today for sentence. Sim was stopped at 3 a.m. yesterday after he drove through Cathedral square at a speed higher than average. Senior-Sergeant Cleary said. Sim told the police that he was going to buy cigarettes. Sim said he was handed his driving licence at Addington on Wednesday. It had no endorsement on it. “I don’t want to go back to prison seeing I only catne out yesterday?’ Sim said. Asking for leniency, Sim said he planned to go to his family in Wellington. There was a job waiting for him. FOUND ON SHIP Searching the Australia Star at Lyttelton on Wednesday, police found Hazel Rahere Evans, aged 22, in a cabin, Senior - Sergeant Cleary said. Evans admitted not working for the last ’few weeks, and at the time of her arrest she had 4s. She was separated from her husband, Senior-Sergeant Cleary said. Pleading guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly in that she had insufficient means of support, Evans was remanded in custody to September 20 for sentence. Charged with indecently assaulting a girl aged five years, six months, Kelvin John McKay was remanded for psychiatric observation. FAILED TO STOP After colliding with a car at the corner of Manchester and Montreal streets, Beatrix Ethel Denniston, aged 70, did not stop, the Court was told. Denniston (Mr P. T. Mahon) was fined £l5 on a charge of failing to stop and £8 on a charge of failing to give way, and was ordered to pay costs on a charge of failing to ascertain whether she had caused any injury. She pleaded guilty to all the charges. Detective - Sergeant P. J. O'Donovan said that Denniston told the police she panicked. She reported the collision to the police an hour and a half later. Mr Mahon said that Denniston was under tile impression that the collision was only a glancing blow. CARELESS DRIVING A fine of £7 10s was Imposed on Kevin Raymond McCaughan. a driver (Mr L. M. O’Reilly), when he was found guilty of careless driving. He pleaded not guilty. Mrs Edith Bray, aged 72. said she was on the pedestrian crossing near the Post Office in Cathedral square about 1.10 p.m, on June 1 when a car struck her. She suffered bruises and a fracture, and was taken to hospital. The defendant, In evidence, said he was 15 feet from the pedestrian crossing when he heard a thump. He did not think Mrs Bray was on the crossing. The evidence indicated that Mrs Bray was not on the crossing when she was hit, Mr O’Reilly said. There was no evidence of negligence. CARELESS DRIVING He did not regard the case as a hit-and-run one, but there was no explanation as to why the defendant did not return to the accident or report to the police, said the Magistrate when fining’ Laszlo Csuti, aged 32, a dye hand. £8 on a charge of careless driving. Csuti's driver s licence was suspended for three months. He was fined £5 for failing to ascertain whether anyone had been injured after an accident, and was ordered to pay costs on a charge of failing to report an accident. Csuti was ordered to pay witnesses' expenses of £6 Ills and costs of £3. A charge of failing to stop after an accident was dismissed. The defendant pleaded not guilty to all charges and was represented by Mr R. G. Blunt. The charges arose out of a collision between Csuti's car and one driven by Alexander Gorton at the corner of Moorhouse and Fitzgerald avenues about 11 10 p.m. on July 11. Two hours of the hearing was taken up by evidence and submissions on the admissibility of a statement made by Csuti on the ground that he could not read or write English. The statement was ruled inadmissible. but the Magistrate said there was no reflection on the constable who took the statement. He had acted in a proper manner and in good faith The Magistrate said he had given every consideration to the fact that the defendant was a Hungarian who had been in New Zealand for seven years. The defendant had some difficulty with the English language,’ but, said the Magistrate, he was not satisfied that the defendant had as much difficulty as he claimed. Csuti was ordered to pay an •interpreter's fee of £3 3s. FINED £lO The evidence for the prosecution clearly established that the defendant overtook a bus in the lace of oncoming traffic, said tlie Magistrate when fining Barry Don McNarn, a baker's labourer. £lO on a charge of careless driving. The defendant was ordered to pay witness's expenses of £4 and costs of £1 10s. McNarn, who was represented by Mr L. H. Moore, pleaded not guilty. The charge arose out of a collision between a car driven by McNarn and one driven by Christopher William Stanbury. in Wairakei road on July 5. about 6.45 p.m. The . accident took place on a dececeptive bend but that was all the more reason why care should have been taken, the Magistrate said. On his own admission the defendant had had four or five Boz beers. Any person who had had liquor and was then Involved in an accident placed himself In a precarious position. DROVE WITHOUT CARE Peter George Martin, aged 17, was fined £3 on a charge of driving without due care and attention at Mead on April 28. He .was ordered to pay witnesses' expenses of £4 and costs of £1 10s. Martin pleaded not guilty, and

was represented by Mr L. H. Moore. Evidence was given that a car driven by Martin collided with the back of one driven by Raymond Leslie Mayo just off the northern end of the Rakaia river bridge about 1 a.m It was a foggy night, but evidence had been given that some of the lights were visible, the Magistrate said. He did not regard it as a serious case but the defendant’s vehicle left skid marks of 44 yards, and that indicated a lack of care in the conditions.
