Hope Gets Medal

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter— Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 12. President Kennedy traded jokes with Bob Hope at the White House yesterday while presenting the comedian with a gold medal honouring his services to democracy. Mr Kennedy got in the first jibe, noting that “this is one of the few bills we have gotten by Congress,” but Hope said it was a "sobering thought that I receive this for going outside of the country —I think they are trying to tell me something.” The 60-year-old comedian recalled that when Mr Kennedy was in the South Pacific as a naval officer, he also had been performing there. “He was a very great, carefree young man at that time,” Hope said. “Of course, all he had to worry about at that time was the enemy. "Twenty years later and he is still on Government rations,” he added.
