Valuate Impressive In Trial For Stakes
Valuate and Boundless sprinted keenly. Magician satisfactorily, and St. Malo lazily in training at Riccarton yesterday. They are rival candidates for the John Grigg Stakes, the feature race at Ashburton tomorrow. Valuate (N. Eastwood) sprinted six furlongs on the No. 1 grass, which gave easy footing, in Imin 16 2-ssec. He was paired with his stablemate Navarro (Finlayson) and they were on terms after dashing over the last half-mile in 49 3-ssec. Valuate ran keenly to a short lea J early, and looked as if he could have stayed clear, given a bit more rein. He carried little weight, but there was obvious merit in this trial, his second good one in the last week.
He is thoroughly seasoned, and his condition "might help him to capitalise on any weakening by his rivals at the end of a hard race. Boundless (Mein) and his stablemate Royal Mile (C. McDonald) dashed over half a mile in 49 3-ssec, staying on terms to the end. Good Trial Roval Mile had a good weight up, but was not overshadowed. If Boundless wins the John Grigg Stakes Royal Mile, on this gallop, should have a second-to-none chance against hack sprinters in the Penscroft Handicap. Magician was shaken up by M. J. Skelton close to home to stay alongside the free-going Omasong ißeritl) to the end of six furlongs, run in Imin 18 3-ssec. St. Malo (N. Eastwood) started with them, but dropped behind from the half-mile and finished in a gap. Magician and St. Malo are both lazy track workers, but their condition is hard to fault and their racing records are sound. Of the others tried at six furlongs none impressed more than Magician's stablemate. Apparel, which ran six furlongs solo in Imin 17 3-ssec. the last half-mile in 51sec. He was ridden by M. J. Skelton. Apparel may take beating In the Methven Improvers Handicap at Ashburton. Zero, another member of the Thomson team, also showed sharp speed in beating Royal Pie (C. T. Wilson), by four lengths over six furlongs. Zero
showed possibilities as a highweight contender at Ashburton by running the distance in Imin 18 l-ssec. the last four in 51 3Gilpey (A. H. Eastwood) and Scribbler (M. J. Skelton) were abreast after running six furlongs in mln 18 4-ssec, the last four in 51sec. The unraced Gilpey went promisingly.
