FOOD PRICE INDEX

Sharp Rise For Month

The all food group of the consumer’s price' index rose by 19 points between July and August, according to figures released yesterday by the Government Statistician (Mr J. V. T. Baker). AU sub-groups contributed to the increase.

Fruit, vegetables and eggs contributed 11% points, meaj and fish 6i points, and other foods 1% points. Of these items or groups eggs (7%), seasonal fruits and vegetables (1%), potatoes (1%), beef meat items (2%), mutton meat items (3%), and sweets and toffees (1%) made a substantial upward contribution. The seasonal fall in egg prices, allowed for in the construction of the index, did not eventuate during August, but autumn and winter egg prices have been lower than is normally the case. In some towns an indirect price increase was recorded for sweets and toffees through a reduction in net weight contents of packets.
