Cardigan Bay Out Of Melbourne Flight

WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. The withdrawal of Cardigan Bay lace yesterday afterncon has reduced the number of New Zealand horses in the airlift from Wellington to Melbourne on September 18 to four. They are Ilumqvh. Lei, Taitua and Otesnatata, The capacity of the airlift is six houses. with an attendant tor each, and J only four horses make the Snip Use cost tor each will be ;n the vicinity of £5OO. Mr M. Dean, whose wife races Cardigan Bay, said in Auckland today toe trip was conceited because increased air charges, plus all the

The cost of his trip had gone up by £lOO and the return trip, tor wtuch Mr and Mrs Dean had planned to charter a special plane. would now have cost £lBOO instead ol £l5OO.
But in Sydney tonight * Qantas Airline spokesman denied that the air freig:U charges liad been increased The Qantas spokesman kid reporter*: “Naturally it would be much cheaper for each owner if five or six horse* made the trip from New Zealand.
“It seems possible Oird:gan Bay would have been returning to New Zealand on his own and that would have been exjx’ns.ve. compared with tihe trip over when he would have been accompanied by tour gallopers." Mrs Dean had planned to slant Cardigan Bay at the Melbourne trotting season opening on October 12. m the Sydney Spring Cup on October 26, and in the New Zealand Cup at Christel Wirch on November 12.
After the New Zealand Cup he was scheduled to return to Melbourne tor the InterDominion Champ tondidps in February and March. Mrs Deen this week inserted an advertisement in a
Sydney trotting journal. The advertisement said there were five vacancies on a flight from Sydney to Christchurch on October 28. Cardigan Bay was booked with Qantas to leave Sydney on that date.
