SHORTAGE OF WAGGONS
Problem “Most Difficult"
There was an acute shortage of empty railway waggons at present because of the large number of vessels discharging cargo at Lyttelton, said the District Manager of Railways (Mr J. T. P. Jones) yesterday. Many more vessels were expected to arrive at Lyttelton to discharge cargo in the next two or three days, so the shortage would probably continue. The problem was most difficult, Mr Jones said. For months staff at the railways shipping sheds had been working overtime to 9 pm. and working on Saturdays in an effort to release as many waggons as possible. Keeping pace with the flow of loaded waggons was difficult. It took much longer to unload and sort cargo from the waggons than it did to load cargo into the waggons from vessels. Sorting the cargo caused considerable delays.
