ATTITUDE TO S.A.

‘Some Coming To Senses’ (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 11. The South African Foreign Minister (Mr Louw), who yesterday attacked Britain and tthe United States for their attitude towards South African racial policies, declared today there were signs that some Western countries were “coming to their senses.” He was addressing the Orange Free State National Party congress in Bloemfontein. where he warned last night that the Simonstown naval base agreement could be dissolved and that South Africa would sell her gold to countries other than Britain. He recalled a warning in New York on Monday by Mr Harlan Cleveland, the United States Assistant Secretary of State for international organisation affairs, that African states could make "shambles” of the United Nations if they oersisted in trying to oust South Africa and . Portugal. Mr Louw interpreted this as a sign that .the United States was “becoming fed up with the noisiness of the African States.” He had noticed a similar trend in Britain’s attitude, he said.
