OVEN FIRES
Fire Brigade’s Advice
Seventeen out of 27 fires in houses attended by the Christchurch Fire Brigade last month were oven fires, according to the report of the Chief Fire Officer (Mr L. R Osmond) received by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board last evening. The danger of oven fires, from overheating, should be brought to the attention of the public again, said Mr T. H. Perkin. Mr Osmond: Then you get overheated housewives. The* one thing that persons should not do was open the oven doo’ - . Mr Osmond said. This only increased the danger of the fire spreading This was particularly the case if persons attempted to take tins of burning fat from the house. “If there is an oven fire, the housewife or householder should immediately turn the power off at the main to allow the oven to cool. In no circumstances should the oven door be opened. The person then, if in any doubt whatever, should telephone the fire brigade,” Mr Osmond said
